Contrary to what others have posted…in absence of a written lease, state laws prevail, and ALL states require some sort of notice period. Not know what state your in…most states require a 30 day notice if you pay rent monthly, 1 weeks notice if you pay weekly.

Legally you don’t have to give notice, but it is a courteous thing to do. You wouldn’t want to be left hanging if you were the one renting it out and someone up and left you without notice. Leaving without notice could put the person who renting it out in a bad spot, responsible for the other person’s rent and they might not be able to afford, hence the reason they are renting it out in the first place.

You only have to give 30 days if there was a written contract (some rentals have them, mostly just leases though). If you payed 1st & last months rent, don’t expect to get your last month back.
If it’s not on paper, it does not count. No such thing as a “verbal contract”.
All that aside, courtesy states you should give some notice.

no not really i guess it is how did you start renting your room did you live there a month then pay for rent or did you pay for that month in advance then lived there? Why give away monies for a room if you are not living there.

I don’t think you have a legal obligation, but it is the decent thing to do. How would you feel if you rented a room out and the person just left you to pay the rent by yourself without any notice….not cool.

If the roomate on the lease is your friend, you’d better give him/her notice if you want to remain friends because you leave the roomate paying all the rent without budgeting for it.

you don’t have the legal obligation, just a courteous obligation to give a notice. maybe a 2 week notice would be nice.

People not on a lease are considered month to month and must give 30 days notice.
